Miami Marlins & Opening Day 2014 get off to an Electrifying start.
On this evening there was a strange energy surrounding the Miami Marlins almost like a sense of hope, pride and the opportunity to witness a special talent evolving right before our eyes. The team will say why not have optimism, it couldn't get any worse than losing a hundred games like they did in 2013.
What possess the team or for that matter the fans to believe or hope to see considerable improvement, well that is easy to answer because the Marlins have a twenty one year old talent coming off a rookie of the year campaign, shows no signs of slowing down and his name is "Jose Fernandez".
This young man has been through many obstacles and hurdles in his personal life that his story is well documented, but i'm here to speak about who i call "Jose The Kid". I call him that because when I see him pitch he has a "Billy The Kid" way about him. He is quick to the plate, has a zest for life, is serious about his craft, he throws straight bullets at 99 miles per hour, has no fear, great sense of humor, optimistic, one who is dependable and would risk his life for those he cares about, these are traits "Billy The Kid" was well known for.
The Miami Marlin fan base has responded well to Jose "The Kid" Fernandez and I witnessed it with every pitch he threw, with every at bat, they hung on his every move. Jose "The Kid" Fernandez did not disappoint the crowd in his first opening day, the ace matched a franchise opening night strikeout record in winning 10-1 over the Colorado Rockies in front of a sellout crowd of 37,116. In six innings struck out nine, tied the previous mark held by Josh Beckett and at home he has improved to a record of 10-0.
If the night could not get anymore festive and emotional Jose "The Kid" Fernandez's grandmother, Olga was there to witness him pitch live for the first time in the majors and in person since he was fourteen years old in Cuba. When the game came to an end and the Marlins were victorious, so was everybody who witnessed this special night whether you were there or watching from your television sets. After the game Jose "The Kid" Fernandez spoke to reporters and said "he hopes South Florida fans take notice because this team is special and this team is going to fight, that is the only thing we want is to go out there and fight".
I personally agree with how Jose "The Kid" Fernandez feels, maybe it's just how he makes you believe in him and his yes we can mentality, but there is no denying there is a buzz in the air. My congratulations go out to the Miami Marlins for starting the season on a positive, the team for rallying around one another to believe just as their "Ace" does and I hope we keep making strides to improve and move this team back into respectability.
